Madhapur: It may perhaps be time for art connoisseurs to bid adieu to the beloved elephantine structures that welcome visitors to Shilparamam. If things go according to plan, construction for Metro Rail and the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) may eat into the two-acre land of the ‘ethnic village’.

The developmental activity undertaken by Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will encroach the compound wall at the face of Shilparamam that houses the iconic elephants.

Highly placed sources from the Shilparamam said, “The government is keen on taking the project ahead and MA&UD Minister K T Rama Rao is trying to minimise 1.70 acres of damage to Shilparamam.

Earlier, the Metro Rail plan was to run the train within the boundary but, now it has been diverted and the Metro will be running in front of a hotel here.”
Earlier, HMRL MD N V S Reddy instructed engineers to shift the existing boundary wall of Cyber Towers slightly inside for accommodating Metro pillars and allowing traffic flow towards the Mindspace Junction at the ground level on the left-hand side of the flyover.

Similarly, to allow smooth passage of traffic at ground level on the right side of the flyover, he gave location marking for the Metro pillars in such a way that only a small portion of the Shilparamam boundary wall would have to be temporarily removed during the construction and restored to its original position immediately after erection of Metro pillars.

It is estimated that it might take five to six months for the proposed project to proceed due to legal formalities. At present only, an action plan has been taken by both the GHMC and HMRL.
